Overview

What NGC Does

NGC grades, authenticates, and encapsulates coins using the same 70-point Sheldon scale as PCGS. Every certified coin receives a certification number linked to the NGC Census database, where population data and images are stored permanently.

🔍

Authentication

NGC's team of experts verify authenticity using physical inspection, high-magnification imaging, and XRF spectroscopy for gold and silver composition verification. Altered, cleaned, and counterfeit coins receive problem designations.

⚖️

Grading

Multiple independent graders evaluate each coin. For world coins and ancients, NGC employs specialists in specific areas — something PCGS does not match for international material.

🌍

World Coin Expertise

NGC is the only major grader accepted by many international coin societies and dealers. Their Ancient Coin certification program is the gold standard for Greek, Roman, and other ancient world coins.

📋

NGC Census

The NGC Census tracks population data for every coin they've certified — searchable by date, denomination, mint mark, and grade. Like PCGS CoinFacts, it's the reference for rarity and pricing.

NGC Guarantee: NGC guarantees the authenticity and grade of every coin they certify. If a coin is later found to be incorrectly graded or counterfeit, NGC provides compensation to the current owner. The guarantee is transferable — it follows the coin, not the original submitter.

Service Tiers

Submission Service Levels & Fees

NGC's fee structure is generally lower than PCGS at the entry level, making it a popular choice for bulk submissions and coins with lower declared values. Fees vary by tier, value, and submission channel.

Submission Process

How to Submit Coins to NGC

NGC accepts submissions directly from the public and through authorized NGC dealers. No membership is required for direct submissions, though membership is recommended for tracking and registry access.

1

Create an NGC Account

Register at ngccoin.com. A free account gives you submission access. Upgrade to a paid membership ($25/year) for the registry, enhanced tracking, and member forums. No membership required to submit.

2

Create Your Online Submission

Use the NGC online submission form. Select service tier, declare each coin's type, date, mint mark, and estimated value. Add optional services like VarietyPlus attribution or Early Releases designation for modern coins.

3

Package Carefully

Each coin should be placed in a 2×2 flip. Arrange flips face-up in a rigid box or submission holder, in the same order as your submission form. Wrap in bubble wrap. Use a sturdy box with padding on all sides.

4

Ship Insured

USPS Registered Mail is the preferred carrier for most submissions. Fully insure for the declared value. Ship to NGC's facility in Sarasota, FL. Keep your tracking number until coins are confirmed received.

5

Track Online

NGC provides real-time submission tracking online. You'll see status updates as coins move through intake, grading, encapsulation, and shipping. Email notifications at each stage.

6

Verify and List

When coins arrive, verify each certification number at ngccoin.com or with the NGC app. Then list on GradeVault — your certification number links directly to the NGC Census entry.

Population Data

NGC Census — Track Rarity and Value

The NGC Census is the definitive database for NGC-certified coins. It tracks populations across all grades, provides pricing data, and includes images of certified coins. Free to access.

📊

Population Census

See the complete grade distribution for any NGC-certified coin. How many examples of an 1881-S Morgan in MS-65 exist? The Census tells you. Population scarcity at the top grades drives price premiums.

💰

NGC Price Guide

NGC's price guide covers hundreds of thousands of coin types across all grades. Updated based on auction data and dealer reports. Used by dealers and collectors as a standard baseline for pricing.

🖼️

Coin Images

NGC stores images of many certified coins linked to the certification number. Buyers can compare their coin's appearance to known examples — useful for detecting altered holders or swapped coins.

🔏

NGC Verify

Enter any certification number at ngccoin.com or via the mobile app. Buyers on GradeVault can instantly verify any NGC-certified coin is genuine before completing a purchase.

NGC Registry — A Competitive Edge

The NGC Registry lets collectors build public sets of certified coins and compete for the highest-quality complete sets. A Registry listing can increase the perceived value of a coin — some buyers pay premiums for Registry-quality examples. It's free with NGC membership.

Assessment

NGC — Who It's Right For

Strengths

  • Lower starting fees than PCGS
  • Faster standard turnaround times
  • Best option for world and ancient coins
  • No membership required to submit
  • Strong international recognition
  • NGC Registry for competitive collecting
  • Broader coin type acceptance

Limitations

  • Slight auction discount vs PCGS on U.S. key dates
  • Green holder less recognized than PCGS blue by some dealers
  • Express service still more expensive than desired
  • Grading consistency varies by category

GradeVault's Take: For everything except classic U.S. type coins and key dates — NGC is an excellent choice and often the better value. Lower fees mean more profit per coin. Faster turnaround means you can list faster. And for world coins or modern mint products, NGC isn't just equal to PCGS, it's the clear winner. Both are fully accepted on GradeVault.
